E-books etc. The new growing market trends

e-bookGrowing trends for paper books shift into e-books…it would be highly overrated. There are many issues with paper books in general : a weak economic condition, which will continue to limit print spending, the differences between APAC, EMEA and US areas which will condition the market growth  depending on culture, price of e-books/e-readers vs. paper books, the security threats related to new information, and last but not least the intrinsic quality/time endurance of a book vs. e-book information (after all, e-book’s history is incredibly short if compared with more than 2000 yrs from first paper books).

Publishing books can be very expensive, from a minimum of 0.15 euro cents per page (without editing) , up to 7 euros (around 10 $) per page with Art covers, to a max of 50 euros (around 36 $) per page if you add the editing costs. You can find references on Lindsay Buroker web site, or read the article of Alan Finder of the NY times published on this link, with an eye for prices comparison at DogEar publishing for example. A good Italian source for “book publishing” is the “rifugio degli esordienti“, which details publishing companies costs as well as DIY book publishing *in euro currency).

E-books can be easily printed online through affiliate programs with several online vendors (e.g. the classic Amazon self-publishing service, Google books, Barnes&Noble, TheSiteWizard, Adobe, other than the Italians Giunti-Demetra, Ebooksitalia, Bruno Editore, LuluFeltrinelli, *Mondadori even if it is very hard to become an affiliate with).

As a result of affiliation, the publishing company ROI may varies from 15% to 80% of the final e-book price (which is generally cheaper than the traditional version in paper) especially when dealing with large enterprise companies looking for high profits/high margins on your work of art.

Considering the cost for scanning a paper version of a traditional book is about 0.15$ per page, an e-book cost is all about contents, publishers and writers, and there is no official price per page (it can be as much as 1.25$ per page up to 300 pages, and 0.4$/page after that, but it can be published for as much as 50$/page or more).

There are several advantages of using an e-book: an increased number of potential readers, the price, the ease of use due to electronic e-book readers *think about how you easily store a 1000 e-books on an e-book reader or usb-stick in minutes, versus a traditional book library, or receiving your new e-book immediately after an electronic transaction from a virtual library.

The advantages of traditional books are mainly the reading ease, the resale value and the fact that no electronic devices are involved to read it, hence no batteries/no electronic fault or virtually no warranties needed with paper books (the last doesn’t apply to ancient and expensive books in general).

Not to mention the increasing success for “photo-box” albums and e-book printing  (I personally had this sparkling idea shared within my website, to create craft e-books for kids, which didn’t have much success, a couple of years back, but I am planning to extend further…).

If you are an artist, the photobox website can create several “art-e-book” formats to be printed in paper book and delivered to your address or in any photo-center nearby, within few simple steps.

Also 3d reproduction is an option, and that’s a growing market too. From stereolithography, invented by Charles Hull in 1984, we really made a huge step forward into this technology, and that’s could be the future of visual books. It might be a devolution for human being, but that’ another post for sure. Have a look at this interesting site ExplainingTheFuture for some hints.

Certainly,  even old press publishing companies are delivering high quality children’s books capturing and interacting with reader’s minds in many alternative ways (The little tiger press publisher is a good example). Some others creates pop-up books like ZooBurst, another flamboyant publishing service allowing you to print and create your own 3d pop-up book in minutes for as much as 30$ or less.

You could collect now your blog posts in one big gigantic book, or select the best posts or photos on your blog and publish them. The beginning of a new trend: the “blog comment e-post-book” era! What a wonderful idea !

Have a nice and productive e-book publishing!
